There’s lots of areas that meet those requirements. St Helens, Houghton lake to Leota, Frederick, Atlanta, kalkaska, just to name a few.

    • Have been told a lot of the "routes" we SxS users are required to use, are paved roads or regular roads used by cars and trucks. Pavement and roads are boring, prefer a more trail thru the woods atmosphere if possible. Looking at the trail maps makes it hard to tell what type of riding surface your on. Been to St Helens but that is all. (Great place to ride) Just pickin brains to find what areas others prefer and the riding conditions for those areas.

Yeah. We are required to use the ORV Routes, not trails. In other words a Jeep could fit down them. That being said there’s a lot of those that are still more like trails than roads. There’s a lot of woods riding to be had. The Baldwin area is another decent riding area.

The roads/ wider routes are a must at some level as they are what make the connection between all of the more wooded riding possible.

Last year we did make a gas stop at the mid point. If I remember right, we met folks who were not camping at one of the trail heads. I'm sure @Dave will chime in on this.

I met the group at the Marathon Gas station last year just off of Hwy 75 in the morning. Are you going to use that as a staging area again for those who are not camping?

This information has also been added to the first post.

    4/24/2019 Update:
We will be staging for this ride at the Frederic DNR parking lot off county rd 612. For those not staying at the campground this is a large parking lot and should have plenty of room for trucks and trailers. We will leave the parking lot a 10am and head to Kalkaska where we will be able to get gas and have lunch. After gas and lunch we will head back to the parking lot in Frederic via a different route. The total ride will be approximately 105 miles. It's not looking like I'm going to be able to do a pre-ride this year so there could be some u-turns. For those staying at Headwaters I will be headed to the DNR lot around 9:15am.

    Hello all,

Can someone confirm that it’s acceptable to have children riding in the back of a ranger in a jump seat? The setup is the seat and rollcage combo bolted into the bed with the kids in car seats. I want to come up for the ride and want to include the kids.

    Thank you for the help!

    Hi Jeremy,
We don’t specifically have a policy against that. It’s ride at your own risk.
I really don’t want to discourage anyone from getting the family out and riding, but I do have some serious concerns. I’m familiar with that type of system, and while the roll cage may or may not be solid, mounting to the bed is of serious concern to me. If the bed was solid it would still be connected to the frame with two hinges and two latches. The fact that beds are plastic is of equal concern. In the event of a rollover there’s a fair chance the bed will either separate itself from the frame, or the roll cage will break free from the plastic bed. I know it’s not my call, but I honestly fear for kids safety every time I see that type of setup on the trails. I also know you probably plan on taking it easy to avoid rolls, but this is off-roading. Things happen when you don’t expect it.
I hope I’m not discouraging you from the off-road world, I just believe side x sides with two rows of seats is a much safer plan.

This forecast has changed a few times in the last several days, but I hope this holds out. If so, it will be a nice day for a ride and a nice evening for a bon fire.

Don’t forget to get your ORV/ Trail stickers! It seem like everywhere sells them until you need them that morning!
